I had given up on getting anyone to let me take their picture for the day when this lady came out of a nail salon practically into my camera range.
I politely asked if I could take her picture. If I could have got the look on her face at that moment, this would have been a great portrait. I expected;modesty, offended humility, maybe a little surprise, a headshake of denial.
What I got from her instead was a masterful display of tolerance.
"I never let anyone take my picture, but I like your reasons".
*She asked to remain anonymous, so I will refrain from any further commentary except to add that when I thanked her I told her she reminded me of a great-aunt who I've lost touch with, and she gave me a look of furious reproach. Baby boomers.
